Additional learning support
At our school, we ensure every student is ready to learn. We support students with disability and additional learning needs so they can take part in all areas of school life. You do not need a formal diagnosis for your child to receive support in a mainstream class. Support can begin at any stage of school.
Every Learner, Every Student
At our school, we ensure every student is ready to learn. We support all students with diverse learning needs so they can take part in all areas of school life. Support can begin at any stage of school.
Supporting Diverse Learners
Some students need extra support to feel confident and do their best at school. We work closely with families to make support plans and adjustments that suits each child’s needs.
Additional learning support can include:
-
teachers and support staff working together with families (and students, if needed)
-
specialist support for students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D)
-
providing tailored programs to help high potential and gifted students with their advanced learning needs
-
small group tutoring to provide targeted literacy and numeracy support for students
-
regular check-ins to review and update the planned supports
-
changes to the classrooms:
- accessible classrooms
- assistive technology
- instructional resources
-
extra guidance, simpler content or different focus during lessons
-
assessment adjustments:
- more time
- simpler language
- breaks during tasks
- different ways to complete a task (e.g. oral presentations instead of written tasks).
We know when a student needs help when:
- teachers notice changes in learning or behaviour
- reviewing assessment results and learning progress
- parents and carers raise concerns or ask for support.
Adjustments are planned with parents and carers. They are reviewed regularly and changed when needed. If you think your child may need extra help, contact us.
Learning and Support Team
Wentworth Falls Public School promotes inclusion and is an environment where every student is known, valued, cared for, and belongs. With a strong student-centered approach, the Learning and Support Team collaborates with parents/carers, and external therapists to address the academic, social, and emotional needs of all students.
Referrals to the Learning and Support Team can be initiated by class teachers, or you can contact the class teacher with your concerns. We encourage parents/carers to engage in discussions about their child's needs with their class teacher, who can facilitate further support.
When necessary, individual adjustments and supports are implemented to facilitate students achieving success. This process involves the parents/carers, class teacher and the Learning and Support Team to ensure a comprehensive support system and plan.
Additionally, students who require sustained adjustments are registered under the National Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD), which helps inform government support strategies and funding decisions.
Together, we strive to empower every student to reach their full potential.
Our learning and support team helps make sure every student gets the help they need at the right time. The team works with families, teachers and support staff to:
- understand each student’s strengths
- plan adjustments and supports
- monitor progress
- connect with other services if needed.
Our learning and support team may include:
- Learning and Support Teachers
- Executive staff
- School Learning Support Officers
- School Counsellors
- Itinerant Teachers for Vision or Hearing
Contact us to meet with a member of this team to talk about your child’s strengths, interests and areas where they may need support.
School Counsellor
School counsellors contribute to student wellbeing in NSW public schools by providing specialised psychological assessment, counselling and intervention services. They have teaching and post graduate qualifications in psychology, hold registration as a psychologist, or are working towards registration with the Psychology Board of Australia.
All requests for counsellor support at Wentworth Falls Public School are made through the Classroom Teacher to the Learning and Support Team (LST). If the LST decides that School Counsellor involvement is required, you will be sent a referral and permission note. The School Counsellor is currently allocated one and a half days per week at our school.
The School Counsellor’s role includes observations, assessments & reports, funding request applications and short-term counselling with onward referrals if necessary. All requests will be prioritised according to need and are limited to issues impacting on student functioning in the school setting.
